Wild Russia, Season 1

Kamchatka

Kamchatka, land of fire and ice: we arrive at the Bering Strait, the eastern border of the Russian empire and close to Alaska. This is a region where volcanoes and pristine forests, huge eagles and giant bears, ice and ocean meet. Russia’s natural history, the primeval power of this land finds its climax here. 200 volcanoes are strung out across the huge peninsula from north to south. Kamchatka never sleeps – powerful forces from the planet’s interior constantly change the landscape. It has over thirty active volcanoes and geysers constantly shooting huge fountains into the air. It is a surreal background for a spectacular mass migration. Away from fire and ice, the region offers dramatic landscapes – forests of Erman’s birch, oceans of flowers, and winding coasts. In the birch forests, huge elks can be found, and the tundra regions away from the coast host snow sheep and marmots. On the coast noisy Steller’s sea lions use their fat layers to stave off the cold. Out here otters are found too, sometimes coming together in a super group to make living floating raft with up to 150 individuals joining the party. For millennia, salmon have been moving up the streams there. This of course means predators and so we find our key characters, including Kamchatka’s bears fishing out in the fast moving water taking advantage of the influx of protein. Big Steller’s sea eagles come fishing here too and take advantage of the food supply to coincide with their breeding on pumice rocks at the sea of Okhotsk. We see the bears feeding on salmon, feeding on caddy flies and also fighting. The Bears mother climbs trees with her cubs to get wild honey and we also see them playing in the mountains. We’ve already filmed Sika deer feeding on kelp on the Pacific coast; Paradise flycatcher feeding chicks on the nest; Chinese merganser feeding, diving and during courtship; and the Chinese Soft-shelled turtle sun bathing, diving, hunting for food and displaying territorial behaviour. We also feature the biggest owl on earth – the Blakiston’s Fish-owl as she sits on her nest, feeds her chick and fishes for food. With underwater filming of Harlequin ducks and Lharga Seal as they dive in kelp waters. We’ll also see - the Amur rat snake hunting and feeding on bird eggs; the Himalayan bear climbing, feeding in Ussuri taiga and playing with her cubs; the Amur Tigers in the snow, feeding on kill and the female with her cubs and Raccoon dogs at Lake Khanka feeding on turtle eggs.

A Secret ForestWild Russia

The Manchurian-Pacific region of Ussuriland houses forests unrivalled outside the tropics. Russia’s Far East is home to the world’s biggest cat – the Siberian tiger – and the world’s rarest –the Amur leopard. Follow the Leopard as it hunts and feeds on prey during the spring or summer months. We will also see them interacting with their young. It is a strange and very “un-Russian” background for the entrance of the tiger and Amur leopard as well as for the colourful Caerulean paradise flycatcher and the world’s biggest owl, the Blakiston’s fish owl. This Kakapo like owl hunts for fish at holes in the ice, wading in shallows. The owls aren’t the only water lovers here….Harlequin ducks split their time between their nests in the Taiga and a life down at the ocean. They are experts at feeding under the torrents of fast moving rivers and we find out what it’s like spending time below the surface. The weird Chinese Soft-shelled turtles can be found at the lake edges here. Tiny hatchlings live and hide in the drift line of the old lake, Chanka. They live in this a zone where sand and water are constantly on move, tumbling like leafs almost invisible to their numerous predators of fish, frogs, birds and even their parents! Exotic birds like the chestnut-flanked white eye, the Siberian blue robin, the dollarbird, the scaly-sided merganser, and the oriental honey buzzard round off the impressive winged wildlife. Exotic representatives of the reptile world such as the Amur rat snake and Fire-bellied toads are here too. Rare mammals like the Asiatic black bear patrol the ginseng forest, while Sika deer, and the goral, a rare species of wild goat, do their best to stay right out the way. At the Pacific shores, the biggest continent and the biggest ocean of this planet meet and the influence and warmth of the Pacific Ocean and the regular monsoon rains have turned it into a varied and exotic land. The landscape is dominated by rich mixed forests, full moon maple, bamboo plants, lotus fields and Pacific monsoon forests.

Great Divide

The diversity in terrain and temperature in the Caucasus area mean that wildlife is spectacular and unique in the wilderness of Dagestan we watch the precarious and dramatic fights of East Caucasian turs. The western region is home to Caucasian wisents, the remnant population of an extinct species of Bison that was saved by cross breeding with American Bison. We follow the winter winter migrations of European bison high up in the winter and then moving down into the lower forests in the summer. Also including Russian tortoise mating and feeding in Dagestan deserts; the long-eared hedgehog hunting and feeding in Dagestan desert, the Caucasian tur climbing an fighting and the Caucasian snowcock displaying signs of courtship high in the alpines. Alongside these amazing creatures well witness Russian saiga In the Kalmykian steppes and Maral in Caucasus mountains. It is also a place of dramatic animal gatherings. Tens of thousands of little bustards spend the winter in shadow of the main mountain range, huge herds of Saiga antelopes flee from fires that ravage the Kalmyk Steppe. These mass migrations are made up of the biggest bustard flocks in the world. In the high Alpine mountains we encounter light footed chamois that jump around the rock faces with such ease that a human climber would be put to shame. In a region of contrasts, adaptation is key and species carve out niches for themselves. Pygmy snakes like the Meadow viper, Darevski's Viper and the Caucasian Viper all hunt their prey here. Lizards have gone to extremes - isolated valleys are like islands and many have species found nowhere else. Some have even dispensed with the need for males, using parthenogenesis to reproduce without them. The Volga delta is home to massive colonies of breeding flamingos. A rare specialist hunts here, the jungle cat, also called swamp lynx. When the ice in front of the delta breaks in spring, breathtaking floes are home to Caspian seals and their young. Its also the site of the World famous, but rarely filmed migration and spawning of the Russian sturgeon the main supplier of caviar. We experience the snow-covered peaks of the High Caucasus mountains down to the Caspian Sea. We explore the world's northernmost "hot spot" for biological diversity. With 6,000 metre peaks they are an exclusive feature with rough valleys, ravines, glaciers, and steep Alpine pastures. Landscapes and climate change quickly here leading to dusty, dry desert steppes, dunes, coastal shorelines, reed mazes, sandbanks and salt pans. They form the basis for the stories we want to tell about the Caspian Sea and the Volga delta.

Siberia

To survive in Siberia, wildlife suffers the extreme as many parts are colder and more hostile than the Arctic. The coldest temperatures of the northern hemisphere were recorded in Yakutia. Here, our key characters include wolves that roam the winter landscape in packs hunting out deer and huge elk that would tower over most men. They live on Wrangel Island where they are often hungry and have to not only protect their territory but also fight over scraps. While many animal species are able to leave the polar seas when autumn approaches, the majority stay here for the winter. Many of Siberia’s diverse species have yet to be captured on film. The southern cold steppes are home to ground squirrels, Siberian weasels, demoiselle cranes, and Saiga antelopes. The strange forest musk deer with tusks like a sabre-tooth tiger roams the larch forests of the taiga. We also plan to film Siberian cranes who come here to perform balletic mating dances; snow geese flock in mass migration; Snow sheep and Beluga schools in the White Sea. The primeval Siberian salamander is one of the best adapted to the region as it can spawn in freezing waters before eggs, newts and even adults may have to survive frozen in subarctic permafrost for years before reanimating back to active life. Lake Baikal is a world in itself and we dive into the deepest and oldest lake on the planet. Each year, hundreds of thousands of Russians go on a pilgrimage to “Siberia’s Pearl”, possibly the most beautiful part of the entire country and home to sable antelope and the rare Baikal seal. They are neighbours to great Brown bears that arrive here for a feeding festival. The clear, cold, oxygen rich waters are perfect for the reproduction of thousands of caddis flies and after hibernation the bears come here to feast on the protein rich food source, turning over stones to find the larvae they crave. Siberia - there is no greater land-based wilderness in the world and it’s characterised by an endless taiga lined by the huge streams of Ob, Yenisey and Lena. There is a grand variety to be found in Siberia’s landscapes with some of the biggest streams, vast forests, mountain ranges, and of course Lake Baikal. Tunguska is a national secret, off-limits for decades. Some 100 years ago, a huge meteorite flattened an area the size of London here and for the first time, we show the wonderful regeneration and diversity at the site that was ravaged by fire storms.

The Arctic

In the Russian Arctic Polar bear cubs play alongside walruses on Wrangel Island. On this remote island life switches between freedom and imprisonment - ice connects it to mainland for part of the year before thawing to leave the worlds highest density of polar bears stranded. They must compete for months, taking what they can from the sea or scavenging on last years frozen scraps – just off the shoreline and in the ice floes, snow white beluga whales are a tempting food source, but tricky to capture. Alongside them white snowy owls and polar foxes follow to clear up any leftovers. Others include the Daurian pika harvesting and storing hay for winter; Siberian chipmunk feeding on stone pine cones in Ussuriland during winter; Tarpan horses standing in deep snow in Yakutia and Argali sheep in Altai Sayan. Siberian newt ; Siberian ibex; Musk deer feeding on lichens, forest reindeer in Siberia and domestic reindeer in Yakutia surviving in the harsh winter conditions. In order to survive here, the wildlife has to make do with short breeding cycles, hibernate for long stretches and protect themselves through layers of fat, thick down or a thick fur. The animals living at or inside the polar circle differ very strongly from those in other parts of Russia. Heavily insulated musk oxen can be found here performing head bashing rutting rituals. These social animals can’t be too active, otherwise they will overheat, even in the extreme cold thanks to their effective coats. Walruses come to the coastline and dodge polar bear attacks. Even the strange life of lemmings can be revealed here – though definitely no mythical mass suicides. And it all takes place where the surreal aurora borealis can be seen high above during the long winter nights. Russia’s northern region is a symphony in white with animals specially adapted to this environment, with visually stunning landscapes and fantastic images of the frozen permafrost tundra. Arctic summer is a brief, intense burst before the world at the polar circle sinks back into darkness and immobility.

Primeval Valleys

The Urals take us into uncharted Russian nature. The Urals are one of the few places remaining to observe the European mink in the wild. We’ll see them nursing their newborn cubs, feeding them crayfish and also building dens in which to raise their precious offspring. With stunning underwater filming we’ll witness their swimming techniques as they hunt for fish. Other key characters include a family of Musk ox who we will they fight to protect their young. We’ve already filmed Wolverine behaviour up close and personal seeing them hunt, feed and climb throughout the summer and winter periods. Skirting around the rivers other animals come into play as we see Moose crossing rivers in search of food. Sharing the waterways with them is the strange and unique Russian Desman, an endemic water mole that has never been filmed in HD before. We have footage of them swimming, hunting, feeding and interacting with their neighbours. Cute garden dormice make their tiny beds here and flying squirrels play overhead, staying out of reach of the giant martens roaming the forest. Above them, flying squirrels glide in the taiga, landing on their tree hole and feed. The Urals are the gateway to the Eastern part of Russia. This massive mountain range stretches over almost 2,500 kilometres and forms the border between Europe and Asia. The Asian side of the Urals themselves is unexplored. Vast Nordic tundra, mountain taiga, lakes, rivers and ancient mixed forests turn the mountain range into the largest European wilderness. When the snow melts, the waters fill the northern bays of the Caspian Sea with nutrients creating blooming lotus fields, reed labyrinths, and bird paradises. On the West Siberian plain they create the river Ob delta and the biggest swamps in the world. A mystical land of forests and bogs, where deciduous landscapes give way to vast coniferous forests, fairy-tale places covered by lichens, thick moss cushions and interspersed by dramatic waterfalls.
