Wild rockabilly quartet Jack Rabbit Slim are back with their second CD, the long awaited follow-up to 2005's Sin-uendo. I'm not sure whether the band are named after the bar in Pulp Fiction or the woman's bedroom accessory. If it's the latter, why don't they cover I Vibrate or Big 10 Inch? Lead singer and former Bob and the Bear Cats front man, Bob Butfoy wrote eleven of the tracks here, the exception being their strolling cover of Gary Numan's Car. The rest of the band consist of Tom Hayes on guitar, Nick Linton on bass and Paul Saunders on drums. The whole shitandshaboodle is rounded off with Eileen Earley on sax and Steve Holbrook on piano. It's this full blooded sound that turns this from a run of the mill rockabilly albums into one of the finest albums I've heard for many a year. There's no better example than the opening track, a red hot rocker that sounds like something from the rockabilly revival of 25 years ago. I know I've said it before but too many bands have the basic trio set-up and unless they are of the highest quality the sound comes over a bit shallow. Happily, JRS avoid that trap by having a fully rounded sound and just as importantly, their songs are extremely well written. The piano on Jeeze Louise is a case in point, the song is great anyway but the touches of piano make it sound like Cavan's Both Wheels Left The Ground or any Gene Summers numbers. This is such an exciting rocker, one of the best new songs I've heard.
The Man Who Counts is a fine Johnny Casher with touches of Big River flowing through it after a Folsom intro. Lula Mae is more hardcore bop in the style of Jeeze. Kitten With A Whip is my least favourite on the album - the lyrics are more than interesting and I'd love to see a video for it, but the beat sounds like a so-so Cramps song. Dragstrip is a flame-throwing instrumental which must have Link Wray looking down with a warm heart. Wild Party and Bop Attack say it all in the titles and Black Dog is a blistering slice rockin' blues. The atmospheric Devil's Heart is enhanced by some tasty sax and drums. There's a Johnny Burnette Trio feel to Hi-Tone Woman and a touch of Bo Diddley to Queen Bee. The band are working hard on the circuit and this superb release is bound to enhance their reputation. My album of the year without a doubt. Brilliant.

14 killers - limited vinyl pressing - rocks! Put this on loud and hold tight! Could Bob and the boys follow Sleazabilly? Well the answer is a resounding yes. These guys take the original 50's energy of raw rockabilly and inject it with some 21st century 'sleaze'. During the course of the album there are clear references to Buddy Holly, Johnny Burnette and other original greats. But it's their own brand of rockin that sets this album alight. Petrolhead is a brilliant hotrodding track with a huge sound, I defy you not to turn up it up loud in the car and wind the windows down. Bikini Bull Ridin' Baby is a humorous sleazy track and Daddy's Got a Gun brings the 50's teenage angst of James Dean 'bang' up to date. The suprise track though is Wolf Call, a cover of an Elvis soundtrack number from Girl Happy, Bob's rendition is brilliant, it was always a favorite at the Hemsby Elvis week and I wonder if this is where Bob got the idea to cover it from? A must have album, I saw the guys play the set of the weekend at the recent Rockabilly Rave, here's to more sleazey albums soon, till then I'll just let this play again.

Sue Moreno Biography From a young age Dutch singer Sue Moreno has been interested in music, and has drawn her musical inspiration from a wide variety of sources. With her main influences Peggy Lee, Ann-Margret, Julie London and Ella Fitzgerald, she also is strongly influenced by Dean Martin, Perry Como and above all, Elvis Presley. When it comes to instrumental Jazz, she is a big fan of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, 40s swing orchestras and the Hollywood orchestras like Martin Denny and Les Baxter. Her love for timeless and most of all melodic music, classic jazz standards and songs from the Great American Songbook comes across in her own music as she brings immortal classics back to life in a vibrant way, in English and Spanish and even Portuguese and French. Sue garnered notice as a member of the rock ‘n roll group Sue Moreno and the Flaming Stars, but after setting out in 2005 as a solo performer she pursued a more jazz-inspired path with her CD debut ‘Dream You’. On subsequent efforts including ‘Bye Bye Blues’, she collaborated with various musicians including legendary pianist Don Randi, Chris Montez and Wanda Jackson. In 2010 she worked with composer Michael Jarrett, who wrote for Elvis. She also toured with the original bandmembers of Elvis Presley in 2010 and 2011. Moreno played at many festivals (Jazz in Duketown, American Music Festival) and clubs and theatres around the world – like residential shows at the Half Note Jazz Club in Athens, Greece, but also Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the USA, Chile, England, Ireland, and France. At live shows, you can’t help but notice her fine intonation and relaxed sense of swing, her sultry and mellow voice and the sophisticated choice of repertoire and the joy she derives from performing. Sue contributed to various commercial ads (Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb perfume line, Otazu jewellery ) and has had much coverage on TV and Radio shows across all of Europe and America including shows like RTL Boulevard, SBS Shownews, Veronica, BRT, OBAlive, Radio 2 Madrid and covered in many well known magazines, newspapers and books from all over the world. In 2012 she is covered in the Spanish glamour mag ‘Imagen y Belleza’ and did shoots for Makinostra Harley Davidson Madrid and Secrets in Lace, Europe. With ongoing dance and acting training, she also starred as a singer, actress and dancer in various theatre shows. In 2012 a new CD City By Night has been released, recorded at the famous Fry Pharmacy analog studios in Nashville in 2010 and 2011, where she is backed up by musical icons Chris Casello, Dave Roe (Johnny Cash), Al Hill (Bettye laVerne) and Jimmy Lester.
When rockabilly girl Sue Moreno meets the boys of Jack Rabbit Slim, the result is sure to be hot. Contrary to many of her counterparts, Sue doesn't try to sound mean and plays more on the seductive side of things which is a good and refreshing thing (when you can afford to do it, and she can). She never screams or else, but instead use her warm voice to whisper in your ears. She penned the Fire is Burnin' a fine rockaballad with a slight country tinge. Still on the country side are "What About Tomorrow" with a melody that reminds a bit of Buck Owens' Street Of Backersfield. She also gives a great rendition of Tammy Wynette's Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad. Jack Rabbit Slim's frontman Bob Butfoy provided eight songs tailor made for the singer, going from rockabilly to latin-with-a-Johnny-Burnette-feeling (Don't Hurt Me) and even a country gospel (Walkin' With Angels). In addition to Jack Rabbit Slim, you'll find the talent of Jim Knowler (Keytones) on backing vocals as well as producer Alan Wilson playing guitar on Elvis'Gonna Get Back Home Somehow. In my opinion the sole low point is their cover of Gone Gone Gone that borrows more to Robert Plant/Allison Kraus version than the Everly Brothers original. But it's not enough to waste the overall feeling of this excellent album.

They’re back with album number 4,twelve new tracks including 11 originals, red hot and smouldering songs that burn their way right through you, this rock n roll is dangerous. The scene today is full of bands doing the same thing; the same covers, ‘the authentic ‘50’s sound’, what JRS do is push the boundaries and challenge what you think this music is all about. Trust me this album is good, very good it’s what rockabilly needs more of, in a word, originality. They have set about taking all of their influences from the varying rockin’ genres and beyond to meld them into something unique and distinctive mixed with the often witty and risqué lyrics of Bob’s and you have ‘Sleazeabilly’. The album has a different feel to the previous ones, each track sounding very different in style, the title and opening track is light feeling melodic early ‘60’s sounding rock n roll number, of lost love and heartache. Shake Rag is a full out blues bopper. The Gift opens with a nod towards Hank Mizell a good heavy bass line bopper, great sharp guitar breaks. Skin is very risqué and one that I will have to skip if the family are in the car! Then Sentimentally Yours brought Gene Vincent to mind in his bluesy ballad style the band appears to take on a Blue Caps sound. We are then catapulted to the 1960’s with Ray Davies’ I Need You, this one really does push those boundaries. Everyday’s Gonna Be Like Yesterday returns to a more gentle sounding rockabilly the bass and drums have a light touch the guitar melodic, to me it has a James Burton feel and sound on some of his Rick Nelson numbers that early ‘60’s rock n roll or even modern country I could hear someone like Dwight Yoakam doing this. Typhoon sees us in more familiar JRS territory a great rockin romp with searing guitar and slapping bass, a rumbling bass note in the background, certainly one to play loud. The Prisoner tells the tale of someone put away for his crimes, it’s hard and dirty just like its lead character. 21st Century Bettie Page is great sleazy song about a stripper. Then High & Mighty is probably one of the highlights of the set clever lyrics about a girl who thinks too much of herself, sounding like Morrisey / The Smiths when they are not in full misery mode. The albums ends with Time Is A Wastin’ on which Sue Moureno can be heard this is a straight forward rockabilly number. The musicianship throughout is first class, the lyrics clever, the more you listen to it the more grows on you.

A short sharp stab of rockabilly adrenaline is delivered with this 4 track EP from one of the top rockin bands on the scene. Their last full length CD saw JRS edge into the more indie sound taking rockabilly into unchartered territory for a while, no bad thing, but this sees them back to their trademark sleazy form of rockabilly with a solid sound that really delivers. The title track is a full throttle rocker with a heavy drum beat and piano backing with excellent guitar breaks, true 'sleaze'. The Hangmans Noose is my pick of the four, more fifties influenced this should encourage the boppers to take to the dance floors of the clubs. Smalltime Casanova has a more full sound to it, a heavy rocker that rumbles through your speakers and vibrates the floor boards. I'm Shook is the shortest track here with a great piano provided by guest Alan Wilson acompanying the tight sound of the band perfectly. Darren's guitar solos are as usual sparkling, the bass of Landon and Paul's drums provide a solid backing with Bob's vocals in fine form. Released on limited edition 7 inch vinyl or available to download this is a great piece of modern rockin.

Jack Rabbit Slim returns with album number six It’s always nice when a band choose an appropriate title for their album and this is certainly true of the latest release from Jack Rabbit Slim. The band have been going in one shape or form for a considerable number of years. Having undergone a further line up change, the band would appear determined to keep being a leading light in the rock scene here in the UK. Importantly, this means not just retreading old ground but maintaining a forward thinking sound. The album certainly opens with a statement of intent in the form of “The Devil’s Bone”. It’s a brash, in your face, rock n roll number. It is rockabilly in source, but with a modern flourish added. This is followed up with an even better song called “Pretty In Ink” which has some great lyrics about a girl you probably wouldn’t want to take home to your mother (although you’d certainly want to take her home!). The appreciation of the female of the species continues with “Natalie Wood”, described as a “goddess of the silver screen”, this song is certainly a fitting tribute to her. The key to the success of Jack Rabbit Slim is their constant willingness to just add something a bit different. “The Jesus Of Cool” adds another nice twist as, not surprisingly given the title, it has a really cool swing beat. It is very retro but also has a kind of punk under tone. On “10lbs Of Sand” we also see that punk energy, but this time it is offset by delivering a humorous feel rather than an angry tone. The punk feel returns with “Our Right To Riot” which adds a slightly political side to the lyrics. It therefore comes across almost like a rockabilly band covering a Clash song. The band aren’t afraid to tip a hat to the past and on “A Little In Love”, there is a far more retro rockabilly theme to the song. It has that proper fifties Elvis feel to it. It provides a nice short, sharp, shot of fun. Speaking of fun, a special mention must go to my favourite track on the album, “MacLaine”. The curve ball this one throws, is by starting out like a classic T Rex track such as “Get It On”. It has that same chugging guitar which is joined by a piano before the drums drop in. It is probably the best song on the album, as it has an easy going, effortlessly cool feel to it. It also has a neat line in British Seaside based lyrics. It had better be hoped, however, that Marc Bolan’s estate don’t become too familiar with the song! The album then draws to a close with “Room 337”. It is quite nice how the album ends, just as it started, with an upbeat, passionate, rockabilly song. This is a really great album, it’s steeped in the tradition of rock ‘n’ roll but importantly has a modern production and twist to it. This means it is totally relevant and not just for old school rockabilly fans. It is actually similar to the work of Darrel Higham and especially his work with Kat Men. It is bands like Jack Rabbit Slim which are essential to not only keep rockabilly alive, but also to keep it progressing.

Jack Rabbit Slim have been one of the most popular & successful bands on the rockabilly scene for the last 10 years. Jack Rabbit Slim are true modern bastions of rock’n’roll, sleazabilly & rockabilly. Jack Rabbit Slim keep the genre alive and jumping, they have a real 1950’s rock and roll sound to them and have much more of an old style sound than some of the more punk orientated bands that are also sometimes linked in with the rockabilly genre. Their 2005 debut album ‘Sinuendo’ drew rave reviews and big sales, and Jack Rabbit Slim never looked back.
