Kinsella also performed all the music, did all the mixing, and recorded the whole thing. Despite what many might think, it all sounds very good. Musically, this release finds Kinsella extending where American Football (his former project) was headed. Many of the guitar parts are reminiscent of the delicate tones that short-lived act displayed, and Kinsella's voice is patterned in the same generous emotional helpings. And in that regard, his voice is the carrier of the infectiously morose tales which only a Kinsella is capable of weaving. Carrying the bulk of the weight of a project via his vocals doesn't seem to phase him, however, as they are pulled off in a stellar manner and sound just as good, if not better than the American Football albums. Kinsella fans and specifically American Football fans will appreciate this, but beyond that, Owen has a wider appeal to fans of the singer/songwriter genre in general.

To record No Good For No One Now, Mike moved back home to his mom's house and converted his old bedroom into a recording studio. During the recording, Mike decided that the cover image should be a print that hung in his mom's house during his childhood. As it turns out, the painting is by a German artist named Charlot Byi, who's figurines and artwork from the 1940's and 1950's are highly collectable today.

Kinsella always leans toward the emo side of things, which is to be expected considering his past, but he manages to be tasteful and not overly melodramatic, mingling reflective lyrics of relationships and the subtleties of life against gentle guitars and the occasional tight drumming as on "Skin and Bones." Kinsella's vocals, with their sense of longing and delivery, work well against the music. "That Mouth" and "Gazebo" touch on an emotional side that brings in slowcore and shoegaze elements along with washes of guitar effects, keyboards, and vibraphone, and sounding similar to Days in December, Karate, or even Ida. This short, melancholic EP is a successful outing by Owen that leaves you with sadness and longing for something you can't quite pinpoint.

I do perceive. differentiates itself from previous Owen releases. While the poetic songwriting and intricate musicianship remain, upbeat arrangements accompany each song's development culminating in an effect that is both majestic and wonderful.

«Owen» - сольный инди-проект Майка Кинселлы (англ. Mike Kinsella), появился в 2001 году в городе Чикаго, в американском штате Иллинойс. Майк Кинселла – один из наиболее влиятельных и значимых персон на чикагской инди-сцене. До создания проекта «Owen» он был лидером команды «American Football», а также играл в таких группах, как «Owls», «Cap'n Jazz» и «Joan of Arc». Идея создания сольного проекта пришла ему в голову после распада команды «American Football». Чтобы не зависеть от других в вопросах создания песен и их выпуска, он и основал «Owen». Свой дебютный альбом исполнитель записал с помощью лейбла «Polyvinyl Records». Но он предпочел работать над ним не в студии, а в доме своей матери, в Чикаго. Кинселла переоборудовал одну из комнат и приступил к записи. Эта пластинка получила то же название, что и сам проект, и вышла осенью 2001 года. Чуть больше, чем через год, на прилавках музыкальных магазинов появился и второй лонгплей – «No Good For No One Now», а летом 2004 публика услышала третий диск, который получил название «I Do Perceive». Совершенно иное, более качественное звучание приобрели композиции с четвертого альбома проекта «Owen». Дело в том, что Майк наконец-то отказался от своей идеи записывать музыку в маминой спальне и перебрался в профессиональную студию. Несмотря на этот факт, пластинка получила название «At Home with Owen», ее официальный релиз состоялся в 2006 году. После этого наступила трехгодичная пауза. В 2007 и 2008 годах музыкант активно работал в еще одной группе – «Joan of Arc». Результатом этого сотрудничества стало появление двух альбомов команды. Долгожданный лонгплей «New Leaves» от «Owen» был издан в 2009 году. Это была уже несколько иная музыка, чувствовалось, что автор пытается найти что-то новое, усложняя и игру на гитаре, и структуру самих песен. О попытке выйти за существующие грани говорит и название альбома. Помимо полноценных пластинок «Owen» регулярно выпускал и мини-альбомы: «The Rutabega/Owen Split» (2004 год), «Owen/The City on Film Split 7» (2007 год), «The Seaside» (2009 год), «Abandoned Bridges Single» (2010 год), «O, Evelyn» (2011 год).
