About Movie.
Produced to the highest standard of scientific film making, INSECTIA is an educational series built on the startling analogies between human and insect behaviour. As of now, our survival on this planet depends on our ability to forge new alliances with nature, and INSECTIA sheds some critical light on the subject.
They have existed for over 225 million years, and long after we are gone, they will continue to create new forms that will occupy every conceivable ecological niche. Their ability to adapt is one of evolution's success stories. Their diversity is phenomenal; their biomass, colossal. By themselves, they represent 80% of all living species; their weight exceeds that of all mammals put together. They are the inventors of paper, sonar, air conditioning, chemical warfare, pharmacology, and specialized workers.

01. Living Art.
With their bright colours, their fantastic textures and their wonderful ornamental details, insects certainly represent the most remarkable artistic phenomenon on Earth. Insects are not only interesting for their scientific or economic value. More and more people are now aware of another value: their beauty.
Entomologist Georges Brossard takes us right into the tropical forest to visit the Sequoias tribe, where craftsmen make sumptuous necklaces with shining leaf chafer shells. He then takes us on a tour of his friend George Foster's workshop, whose sculptures of giant insects amaze the world.
Along with beetles and sculpture, there are also butterflies and pictorial art. Their wings are works of art which could be framed. They are a combination of fauvism, expressionism and abstract art.
We do not know why and for whom insects make themselves beautiful? Let's not try to understand. Let ourselves simply be seduced by all these astonishing demonstrations of living art.

02. Silent Partners.
Insects are present in all of our planet's ecological niches. As if that was not enough, they can now be found in various branches of industries that used to be typically human. Medicine, robotics, even police investigations are all fields where we are finding more and more insects.
Entomologist Georges Brossard takes us to Chinese drugstore in Asia and reveals to us the surprising medicinal properties of many insects. Insects are not only found in traditional Chinese medicine, they are also used today in our modern hospitals to save injured people from amputation and to relieve arthritic pain.
Insects are even found in fields as specialised as robotics. To create futuristic robots and machines, more and more engineers are inspired by the wonderful mechanics of insects, improved by millions of years of research and development.
Even the police call on insects to solve certain enigmas. Georges Brossard and his colleague, Dr. Baharudin, lead the investigation. Since the fly is often the first to arrive at the scene of a crime, this insect might reveal decisive facts to a legal entomologist. From now on, we should replace the famous ""Elementary, my dear Watson"" by ""Elateridae, my dear Watson""!

03. Myths & Legends.
Humans have always been very good at creating myths and legends. Since the dawn of time, man has shared his garden, his house, even his bed, with insects. Not surprisingly, they have also invaded his imagination!
Entomologist Georges Brossard refers to the creation myths of several nations to tell us the story of the world's creation, revised and updated by insects. According to these legends, the Earth was created by a spider, the ocean by a water strider and the stars by a beetle. As for butterflies, they gave humans the most marvellous gift of all: colours.
Because of their strange shape and behaviour, some insects, such as the mysterious praying-mantis, are automatically credited with magical powers. Other insects, whose stings are extremely painful, are used in cruel initiation rites... which Georges Brossard will experiment himself!
It is not always easy to scientifically explain the strange behaviour and the incomprehensible strength of insects. It is much easier, even for the modern man, to evoke their magical powers.

04. Invertebrate Inventors.
The wheel, agriculture and breeding: mankind's three greatest inventions? Wrong! The humble dung beetle invented the wheel while the ant invented agriculture and breeding.
Insects are our planet's oldest inhabitants. It's not surprising that they have invented almost everything in fields as varied as communications, transportation, engineering and architecture. Oars, wings, jet engines, concrete, paper and cold light are all patents which rightfully belong to insects.
How can an insect with a brain the size of a grain of sand become a brilliant inventor? Entomologist Georges Brossard answers this question through a series of surprising experiments which prove that not only can insects learn, but they also have a kind of innate knowledge.
Insects definitely have a flair for invention...all they need now is a few good lawyers!

05. New World Order.
What is the best system for managing a society? Communism? That just collapsed. Good old capitalism? That system is also showing signs of exhaustion. Don't look further. Three systems beat, in terms of longevity and efficiency, everything ever created by man: the multinational corporations established over 200 million years ago by termites, bees and ants.
By digging up termites and ants hills, and by carrying out all kinds of field experiments, entomologist Georges Brossard finally reveals the industrial secrets that have contributed to the tremendous success of social insects.
We discover astoundingly efficient organizations based on the construction of an ideal workplace, specialization of the work force and strict staff management. The result: extraordinary productivity.
Here is some sound advice: stop investing in Japanese corporations. Instead, put your money on Ants & Associates, Bees International or Termites Inc.

06. Wicked Butterflies.
Among all insects, butterflies are definitely the ones with the best reputation. Everyone loves these gracious flying stained-glass pieces of artwork that have inspired poets and charmed nature lovers. However, butterflies are actually violent animals, drug addicts and sexual maniacs.
They are real Dr.Jekylls and Mr.Hydes. These harmless pollen-gatherers were, at birth, voracious caterpillars that would make even a big white shark jealous. Entomologist Georges Brossard knows something about it: we will see him work like a maniac to feed caterpillars on a butterfly farm.
We usually think butterflies are soft and fragile. On the contrary, like most insects, they are remarkably robust. Monarchs, for instance, can make an incredible migration of thousands of kilometres. Butterflies also defend their territory against other insects and fight between themselves. They only have one idea in mind: sex. A butterfly is, in fact, only a copulating flying machine.
Some butterflies are definitely drunkards, filling up on the alcohol from fermented fruits. Others appreciate exotic meals such as urine, excrements and rotten fish.

07. The Mating Game.
Sex is said to be as old as the world. So are insects. Of all the animal species, they are the ones who have developed the most surprising tactics for the meeting of spermatozoons and ovules. With these real sex magicians, the genetic background is always on the move!
Cicadas sing serenades, butterflies use their perfume for seduction, fireflies warm up to the flame of love. Mates are sometimes tender, such as the palm weevil that softly caresses its partner, or sadomasochistic, like the praying mantis that eats the male during mating. On the other hand, the goliath beetles embrace for days, a real lovemaking marathon. Machos should think twice!
At first, the sexual behaviour of insects might seem strange to us, but a closer look provides us with a view of how they use the same old techniques we do: searching for a soul mate, eliminating the competition, seducing our partner and concluding with the mating itself.
Entomologist Georges Brossard even introduces us to a really surprising insect, the stick- insect, which has found the strangest way of continuing its species: by not copulating!

08. Mad About Bugs.
In this episode, we become acquainted with a rare specimen: entomologist Georges Brossard himself. We follow this passionate researcher in his never-ending quest for the ""Insect El Dorado"". Why and how does one become mad about bugs? This is what we will find out by following Georges along the turbulent waters of the Orinico River and within the confines of the great tropical forests of inland Venezuela.
This expedition will also be an opportunity to explore the phenomenon behind the fear of insects which, for some people, may develop into an actual phobia. Why are insects the planet's most unpopular species? They are infinitely more beneficial than harmful. Only 1% of all the insect species are harmful to human beings. Some bite or sting, but they never do it intentionally. Georges, who had the opportunity to personally test just about every insect defence mechanism, is still alive to tell us about it.
Mankind can and must reconcile with insects. Georges Brossard has made it his mission for more than 20 years by creating insectariums on various continents, by speaking to the wide audience of INSECTIA and sometimes simply by placing a beetle in the hands of a person who will learns to no longer fear insects.

09. Insect Gods.
From their very first intervention on Earth, the Gods of Ancient Mexico chose the insect and the arachnid to reveal themselves to humans. This surprising alliance would give rise to numerous myths which entomologist Georges Brossard finds fascinating. Shot in the fabulous scenery of ancient Aztec and Maya cities, this episode of INSECTIA reveals to us the surprising importance given to insects in religions of these ancient civilizations.
Quetzalcoatl, the God of Wind, the Master of Life, the Supreme Creator, appeared on Earth emerging directly from a chrysalis, like a butterfly. Bees helped him outsmart the God of Death so he could create the first humans. Afterwards, it was an ant that gave man the first grains of corn that would ensure the survival of the human race.
Xochiquetzal, the Goddess of Flowers, used to take the shape of a magnificent hairstreak butterfly to visit the Earth. As for her terrible sister, the Goddess of War, she preferred to transform herself into a sombre moth. Two insects who together epitomize the Maya and Aztec religious thinking. A butterfly, associated with arts and love, and a moth, associated with death and human sacrifices.
According to the beliefs of the time, insects even went to paradise. One thing is sure: the great forests surrounding the ancient cities are certainly an insect's and an entomologist's... paradise.

10. Insects a la carte (Very Fast Food).
Entomology is really Georges Brossard's cup of tea. And, sometimes, he even likes his tea served with... cooked insects! Pound for pound, an insect contains more nutrients and calories than meat, with not a trace of fat. What more could we ask for? Only one thing: to slightly broaden our culinary universe and to realize the importance of entomophagy.
Since the beginning of time, man has eaten insects. In the Roman era, beetle larvae were sold as a delicacy. In Asian countries, people eat forty different species of insects, some of which are only available in top restaurants and cost a small fortune. Mexico also has a solid tradition of entomophagy. Georges Brossard invites us to go on a real gastronomical tour of this country.
On the menu: Ahuaulte (water strider caviar), Gusano de Maguey (caterpillars), Tortillas de Jumil (stink bug), Escamoles (ant larvae), Vinitos (honey ants). We will also meet the Mexicans who harvest the insects and the chefs who cook them.
Our North American societies are starting to savour entomophagy as well. The insect tastings organized by several insectariums (such as the Montr_al Insectarium's Insect Tastings Event) are becoming more and more popular.
Go ahead! Swallow your fears and crunch an insect! In any case, don't you already have butterflies in your stomach just thinking about it?

11. Child's Play.
For the last few weeks, a strange visitor has been staying in the lost village of Puerto Nuevo, located right in the middle of the impenetrable forests of inland Venezuela. Not only does he show interest solely in insects, but he has set his mind on initiating the village children into entomology. Mission impossible? Not necessarily, especially if that visitor is a popularizer of Georges Brossard's calibre.
Georges's young students have access to the best classroom ever: the tropical forest. The first lesson: ""What is an insect?"" Children quickly discover that insects are indeed animals. By catching and handling a giant beetle, they learn the basic notions of anatomy. Georges then initiates his disciples into the art of using a butterfly net and of digging a hole in a tree stump to find beetles. He even teaches them an old hunter's trick: how to catch a tarantula!
Georges's young apprentices make great progress, catching more and more insects and learning to classify them according to the various insect families. Without realizing it, swarm of insects becomes more orderly, even for the viewer. So there you have it: entomology can really be child's play.

12. Six-Legged Warriors.
Entomologist Georges Brossard invites us to witness the impressive military manoeuvres that are taking place in Venezuela's mysterious tropical forests. As we might suspect, the soldiers are actually insects. The reason behind this war: a battle for their survival.
Chemical warfare, camouflage, detection of radar waves, sap war, air supremacy, kamikazes attacks, all military tactics and techniques engineered by different insects for offensive as well as defensive purposes.
Shining leaf chafers, with their gleaming metallic colours, use a camouflage technique that until recently was a state secret. The best assault helicopters are no match for dragonfly acrobatics. Compared to army ants, the hordes of Gengis Khan look like boy scouts. Do you know of any arms race worthy of this name? How about the one that has been going on for 100 million years between ants and termites?
War is far too important to leave it to the military. Why not leave it to the real experts: the insects?

13. Champions Of Evolution.
Insects are the best way of preserving life on our planet. Some 225 million years ago, hexapods were the first living creatures to breathe oxygen, walk on the ground and fly in the air. What's more, some insects were so perfectly designed from Day One that they have remained virtually unchanged.
While showing us the wonderful panoramas of the great Venezuelan Savannah, entomologist Georges Brossard also reveals why and how insects have become the champions of evolution.
First of all, insects are time masters. They are the oldest animals. If conditions are not favourable, they can even enter into diapause, go into a dormancy state or stop time.
Since they are so small, insects have multiplied the available space around them. A leaf becomes a vast pasture, a tree a gigantic building. A single water drop quenches their thirst while a measly crumb of bread feeds them.
Insects can adapt to environmental changes thousands of times faster than us. During a human's lifetime, simple aphids will produce 400 generations!
Nothing can illustrate their adaptability better than the discovery of insects at the top of Venezuela's inaccessible tepuis, the tabletop mountains located in an isolated region of the country, on the south-eastern side of the Orinico River. Right in the middle of these inhospitable rock formations, Georges Brossard introduces us to a brand-new life form: an undersea grasshopper!</div>
