For general purpose 3D blackoil reservoir modeling

With fully implicit, three-phase, 3D simulations, ECLIPSE Blackoil reservoir simulation software can model extensive well controls and support efficient field operations planning, including water and miscible-solvent gas injection. The blackoil model assumes that the reservoir fluids consist of three phases—oil, water, and gas, with gas dissolving in oil and oil vaporizing in gas.

By choosing from various add-on options, such as coalbed methane, gas field operations, reservoir coupling, EOR, multisegmented wells, and surface networks, ECLIPSE simulators can be tailored to your needs and greatly enhance the scope of your simulation studies.

ECLIPSE Compositional Simulation
For handling multicomponent fluid behavior

The ECLIPSE Compositional simulator is useful when an equation of state is required to describe reservoir fluid phase behavior or compositional changes associated with depth. A compositional model is the right choice for studying condensates or volatile crude oils, gas injection programs, and secondary recovery studies. Knowledge of compositional behavior is also required for accurate planning and design of surface production facilities.

Compositional simulation is ideally suited for

* gas injection cause by gas stripping
* miscible flooding, as the injection gas goes into solution with oil
* carbon dioxide flooding, with the gas soluble in both oil and water
* thick reservoirs with a compositional gradient due to gravity
* reservoirs with fluid compositions near the bubblepoint
* high-pressure, high-temperature reservoirs
* natural-fracture reservoir modeling.

ECLIPSE 2009 Reservoir Engineering Software
Release adds new functionality to ECLIPSE simulators in one of the largest development efforts to date in the industry.

Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in ECLIPSE Blackoil now includes:

* a low-salinity model based on SPE 102239
* effective salinities
* new adsorption models
* a simplified alkaline mode
* EOR keywords compatible with user-defined arguments (UDA) that help you model sophisticated rule-driven scenarios
* multicomponent brine for EOR, which considers the transport of multiple salts and ion exchange reactions with rock surfaces and surfactant, and can then be used to define effective salinity for polymers and surfactant properties.

Complex well modeling

Looped multisegment wells (ECLIPSE Compositional) - Extension to the multisegment well model allows accurate modeling of configurations that are not effectively captured by a gathering tree topology. Looped flowpaths typically involve situations where the inflow from the reservoir enters the annulus and passes through control valves into the tubing. When there is more than one inflow control device between packers in the annulus, the new development removes the previous assumption of an obstructed annulus.

Linear phase rate target (ECLIPSE Blackoil, Compositional) - Increases the flexibility of complex field management and well controls in ECLIPSE software by allowing you to linearly combine phase rates on wells as targets or limits.
Advanced field management

User-defined tables (ECLIPSE Blackoil, Compositional) - User-defined tables (UDT) for lookup and calculation of user-defined quantities (UDQ) enhance functionality. UDQs were introduced in ECLIPSE 2007.1 as mathematical functions of in-built quantities, empowering users with significant extensibility in exercising conditional logic (action). In 2008.1, this functionality was extended with user-defined arguments (UDA). All summary vectors are available to UDQ definition, and in 2008.1, broke new extensibility ground by allowing usage of UDQ as arguments in keywords (UDA). This release enhances this functionality.
Tracers

Lagrangian tracer transport (ECLIPSE Compositional) - For compositional simulations, a new Lagrangian or streamline-based approach enables faster and more accurate solutions for tracer tracking. This solution uses the ECLIPSE FrontSim streamline tracing algorithm and solves for the tracers along the streamlines.
Thermal simulation

Performance and capability (compositional simulator in thermal mode)
Capabilities added on the thermal code include:

* an extension to the Vinsome heatloss model
* phase conductivities for every phase
* thermal CO2
* dual porosity support
* the ability to connect over/underburden heat losses to local grid refinements
* capability to run a thermal flux boundary model from black-oil (e300), compositional, and thermal base model
* further tuning of the thermal linear solver (JALS) to place ECLIPSE thermal performance ahead of its main competitor (observed in recent benchmarks).

Naturally fractured media

Performance and capability (ECLIPSE Blackoil, Compositional) - Capability to model block-to-block flow with LGRs in black-oil and triple porosity systems enhances extensions that support modeling of naturally fractured reservoirs. For the compositional code, we now support modeling of triple porosity systems with LGRs.
Workflow enablement

Integration with Petrel (ECLIPSE Blackoil, Compositional) - Workflow-enabling ECLIPSE and Petrel software integration includes efficient design of multisegmented wells. New with the 2009.1 release: automatic looped flowpaths generation.

Integration with VISAGE (ECLIPSE Blackoil) - VISAGE 2009.1 can be coupled with ECLIPSE Blackoil so that rock stresses and reservoir properties can be modeled together. VISAGE is the Schlumberger reservoir-scale geomechanics modeling and simulation system with applications in reservoir engineering, production, heavy oil, CO2, underground gas storage, and water services.
ECLIPSE FrontSim

The 2009.1 release adds the following functionality to ECLIPSE FrontSim:

* ranking/screening simulation
* waterflood optimization
* pattern-flood management enhancements
* multithreading
* dual porosity systems.

Tools

A new simulation launcher tool is provided with this release. The new tool is user-configurable and provides status information on submitted jobs. For more information, consult the User Guide available from the Help menu on the tool.

The Schlumberger licensing tool, recommended for configuring Windows-based license servers, is updated with improved functionality and helps users with licensing problems.
