Who says EPs aren't worth owning? Mastodon's Lifesblood may actually be stronger than their excellent Remission album in some respects. Heavy as a REALLY heavy thing, and rife with tuned down riffs and monstrous tempo changes, Mastodon's brand of relapse-metal is one of the best things going. If you don't believe me try listening to 'Welcoming War' a few times at maximum volume. Brann Dailor's drums are as awe inspiring as ever.... this is the future sound of metal now.

Ух ты! Как же я жалею, что не послушал это замечательный коллектив раньше! "Remission" – дебютник пятилетней давности и уже на нем Mastodon демонстрируют отличный пример композиционного многообразия, создающего калейдоскоп великолепных гармоний и настроений посредством однотипно-тягучих гитар, умноженный на высокую технику исполнения. Впрочем в этом ничего удивительного – половина состава Mastodon, а именно гитарист Bill Kelliher и ударник Bram Dailor, участники любимых мною Today Is The Day – эта банда тоже не "Шиком" брита. Преимущественно среднетемповые и медленные трэки радуют риффовым и мелодическим чуть замороченным непостоянством, многочисленными ритмическими сбивками, но при этом поразительно, насколько легко материал ложиться на слух и усваивается. Неспешное, но очень при этом эмоциональное музицирование затягивает подобно густой жиже болотной грязи – окончательно и бесповоротно. Очень, как это ни странно, приятное ощущение вызывает низкий и грязный саунд с перегруженным басом – музыканты будто смакуют каждый аккорд, заставляя слушателя также жадно поглощать эти звуки. И когда, казалось бы, уже пресытился, незатейливая мелодия вступления очередной композиции вновь вынудит застыть неподвижно, чтобы через несколько секунд окунуться в очередной водоворот сводящих с ума тягучих риффов. Есть, конечно, и угарные композиции, например "Burning Man" – усидеть на месте очень тяжело, однако и на высоких скоростях группа не прекращает упражнений с ритмикой. Отдельные респекты барабанщику, которых в медленных композициях, особенно, когда идет эмоциональное затишье и однообразие, начинает выкидывать невиданные коленца на своей установке, не позволяя ушам отдохнуть, а разуму расслабиться. Альбом прекрасен во всех отношениях, как в композиционном, так и в техническом. Будь то повторяющаяся по кругу мелодия или хитрозакрученный рифф – "Remission" не отпускает внимания ни на секунду. Сегодня эти качества встречаются нечасто, так что честь и хвала музыкантам. А передо мной и теми, кто не знаком с этой группой, программа минимум – перелопатить в кратчайшие сроки дискографию Mastodon, ибо пропускать мимо ушей такое просто неразумно.

Европейское Deluxe-издание с бонусным Audio-DVD (к сожалению, самого Audio-DVD нет, был бы безмерно благодарен за помощь в поисках). Правильный рип (правда, пришлось добавить в конец 6 пустых семплов), прошел проверку по базе AccurateRip.

"Leviathan" представляет собой жутко концептуальный, тяжёлый, но мелодичный альбом. Несмотря на то, что он дебютный, мастерства у ребят хоть отбавляй, и качество звука на высоте. Альбом замешан на водной тематике, у группы получилась очень правдивая, объёмная атмосфера, при прослушивании альбома на ум сразу приходит море, штормы, тонущие корабли, особенно в этом помогают вставки со звуками плещущейся волны. Когда идёшь по улице с "Leviathan" в плейере, забываешь обо всём, мгновенно проникаешься духом альбома. Музыканты играют очень технично, в песнях много резко меняющегося ритма, контрастные гитары, прыгающие с низких частот на высокие. Присутствуют джазовые длинные красивые соло. Порой создаётся впечатление, что ребята играют классику на электрогитарах. Также хочется отметить виртуозную игру барабанщика, порой выдающего неимоверные проигрыши и соляки. Вокал нормальный, но недостаток в том, что он звучит слишком тихо и мутно, стоило бы сделать его погромче. Среди песен хочется выделить "Iron Tusk", эдакий боевик с тяжёлым куплетом и более мелодичным припевом, "Naked Burn", мелодичная вещь с лёгкими гитарами и красивыми проигрышами, а также "Aqua Dementia" и тринадцатиминутую "Hearts Alive", мелодичные песни-симфонии с чувством гитарной классики, меняющимися ритмами и мотивами, по полной раскрывающие морскую тему. Я не мог ждать такого от дебютного альбома, моё мнение - полный восторг!

Sludge music usually brings along bands that best engender a type of aggression that is so raw, that the flaws in their music perceived by the audience are actually perfections to the bands themselves. Following a sort of almost lethargic drone at times, along with melodies which seem almost unnatural for the inexperienced listener, Mastodon have created a sublime environment of aggression and subtlety within Call of the Mastodon.
From the indecipherable vocals of Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds, to the insane drumwork of Brann Dailor, Call of the Mastodon is a kick in the face to the world of average, melodic music.
The music itself usually is consistent of the sludge category, while sometimes evoking an almost grind feel at times. Even then, the music in this album also emanates some strange melodies that tend to go against the grain of modern music; mainly because of the guitarists use of open stringed picking on their baritone guitars.
The vocals on Call of the Mastodon are distorted screams of rage and never let down their attack on the listener.
The guitars are often drony and chaotic, while many times contorting their way around versatile rock licks and subtle clean-guitar picking passages. Truly, the riffs on this album are very entertaining and stand out. This feeling is highly expounded upon by the very low end of their baritone guitars which, unto themselves, bring a distinct sound which makes their riffing much more interesting to listen to.
The bass serves to accentuate the heaviness throughout the album, but never becomes the focus of instrumentation.
The drums are purely the work of a genius who truly knows his calling. They are performed is such the way of a sort of jazz style, yet with a much more dominant and hyperactive approach than that of the average jazz drummer. Brann Dailor dominates Call of the Mastodon with his percussional expertise and creativity; and, were it not for him, Mastodon really would not be the exceptional creative band as they are known.
The songs themselves are oftentimes quite progressive, but pack a punch that most progressive music does not. However, unlike standard prog., the songs on Call of the Mastodon are short in length; good enough for a memorable, headbanging experience.
Overall, Call of the Mastodon is a very entertaining EP (that should be classified an LP) that is superb in all aspects of their style and serves as more than just a testament to their original sound.

Несмотря на весьма короткий срок существования на большой сцене, Mastodon закрепили свои позиции в металле, так крепко и так высоко, что до них не может дотянуться ни одна из современных групп. Секрет всего этого прост: Во-первых, это умение создавать по-настоящему тяжёлую и драйвовую музыку, без всяких временных “штампов”, что делает каждый альбом Mastodon, просто произведением на века. Во-вторых, настоящий клад свежих и ещё неиспользованных идей. В-третьих, отточенный профессионализм в игре на инструментах начиная от гитар и заканчивая барабанами. Данный альбом развивает идею группы сделать свою музыку более необычной, тяжёлой и в то же время мелодичной. Сразу можно заметь, что у Mastodon с каждым разом это получается всё лучше и лучше. “Кровавая гора” может похвастаться наличием лучшего качества звука, чем на предыдущих работах и потрясающим разнообразием композиций, которые одинаково подойдут всем ценителям трэша, хард-кора и прогрессива. На альбоме полно жёстких и мелодичных риффов, оригинальных соло и техничных барабанных партий. Вокал практически во всех треках сменяется, иногда в песне можно услышать до четырёх разных голосов. Припевы так же меняются, есть песни, где их два. Кстати, очень часто в песнях звучит голос Joshua M. Homm’а из Queens of the Stone Age, поскольку он был главным гостем при записи альбома. Я небольшой мастер описывать песни, но всё же постараюсь их описать:
"The Wolf Is Loose" – очень быстрый трек с меняющимся ритмом гитар, быстрыми барабанами и сменяющимся вокалом; "Crystal Skull" – немного медленнее предыдущего трека, зато ещё тяжелей; "Sleeping Giant" – песня с запоминающимися гитарными проигрышами и акустическими вставками; "Capillarian Crest" – риффовая гитара разгоняется на протяжении песни, и уже к середине игра становится очень быстрой, после появляется припев, в конце гитары утяжеляются, вокал становится орущим; "Circle Cysquatch" – очень брутальная композиция с классными риффами и мощными барабанами; "Bladecatcher" – очень тяжёлая и в то же время мелодичная инстументалка; "Colony Of Birchmen" – песня с интересным проигрышем в начале и длинным соло в конце, с периодически меняющимся вокалом; "Hunters Of The Sky" – реальный “боевик”, с запоминающейся лирикой. "Hand Of Stone" – песня с меняющейся тяжестью и запоминающимся припевом в середине; "This Mortal Soil" – вокал очень мелодичный, периодически сменяется более тяжёлыми припевами; "Siberian Divide" – самая мрачная песня в альбоме, с очень интересным, тянущимся риффом; "Pendulous Skin" – ёще одна интересная инструменталка, которая завершает альбом.
В-общем, Mastodon создали просто зубодробительный альбом, если вы его не слышали, тогда вы точно не имеете полного представления о современном металле.

Worryingly average track from Mastodon, doesn't really pack the punch they usually muster. This does not damage my hopes for the album too much, as it appears to be the shortest track, but is slightly worrying nonetheless...
Edit: this ^ is what I thought a month ago. After lots more listens, and hearing it nice and loud at a metal club, I'm bumping this from 2.5 up to 4. Has really grown on me.

[i]"Hipster metal". What an unfortunate tag to have placed on you. Having your efforts reduced to nothing but a ploy to attract adventurous Pitchfork readers; a mere curiosity that provides a playlist break between Feist and Panda Bear and seems to say "Hey! Look guys, I actually like some metal!" -- in the same way MF Doom proves indie kids' hip hop chops. Mastodon deserve more credit than that; more than the fickle appreciation of trend-whore hipsters and more than to be marginalized by metalheads claiming the band isn't even metal anymore and therefore sucks (they aren't metal anymore, but they do not suck). It was with this in mind that made it hard for me not to smile at the copper-colored sticker on the front packaging of this album, which reads "The New Album From Globally Revered Hard-Rock Masters." There, "hard-rock"; in one fell swoop proving the metalheads right and the hipsters wrong and moving the fuck on with it. Ending the pointless debate and challenging listeners to take their music for what it is and not what the listener thought it was or wants it to be or what is and isn't hip. Or, you know, something like that.

They haven't gone back to the drawing board or made any dramatic changes, but they've kept moving in the same direction: more prog, more crazy (some might say "stupid") concepts, more guitar godliness, but now with more focus and 25% more epicness. At 50-minutes divided into seven tracks, they didn't do their label's PR team any favors. Actually, they gave them one proper single: "Divinations", which has the shortest length (three-and-a-half minutes), the largest hook, and arguably the most blistering guitar solo in an album filled with them. It's obviously there to keep the label heads' hair intact, yet it doesn't seem forcefully tacked-on even if it is the weakest track. The other tracks are given a bit more time to simmer and they make good use of it; shifting and changing riffs at will and bringing it back together by the time it's all over. Take "Oblivion", probably their first album opener that doesn't assault your speakers from the 0:00 second mark. Three different vocalists have their turns at the mic, the best of which comes from Brent Hinds, who seems to have been looking to the Motown catalog (between drunken encounters with other bands) because he really brings the soul to this track as well as others. Fear not, it's not anywhere near as awful as I've described it.

I''m going to be abrupt here, because I could potentially go on for a lot longer counting the ways in which this album kicks ass, describing in detail my favorite moments and whatnot (top two: Scott Kelly's excellent contribution to the title track; the earth-shattering, devil horns-inducing final minute of "Quintessence"), but it's just going to get redundant and I like to restrict my use of the word "awesome" to two or less times per review. So here's the album's only flaw: the central riff for "Ghost Of Karelia" is blatantly recycled from the Blood Mountain song "Sleeping Giant". There, that's about it.

Crack the Skye is an incredible album. It's Mastodon's most complete work yet and undoubtedly the greatest thing they've ever done and probably will do. Only four months into the year, hard-rock, metal, or whatever you choose to call it, has it's best album of 2009. I can't really say it more clearly than that.</span>
