Норвежец с арабскими корнями по имени Ройрке Сатре Хантатат (Royrke Satre Khantatat) известен немногим, а вот американец Рой Хан – очень уважаемая и культовая фигура в высшей лиге прогрессив- пауэр-метала. Покинув некогда очень могучий и возлагающие большие надежды норвежский коллектив Conception, Хантатат отправился за океан в поисках счастья, за что ему огромное человеческое спасибо. Ибо прозябающий где-то на флоридских подмостках прогрессивно-металлический коллектив Kamelot имел мало шансов выбраться из разряда клонов Savatage, Fates Warning и Dream Theater. Рой сократил свое труднопроизносимое имя для простодушных американцев, замутил себе имидж эдакого печального ловербоя и принялся перекраивать Kamelot в то эмпирическое состояние, которого вполне мог бы добиться в свое время Conception, не уйди гитарист вышеозначенной группы Тори Остби в дикие пущи прогрессива, сдобренного долей фламенко (что, по сути, можно наблюдать в работах группы Ark, где вокальные партии победоносно исполняет не менее выдающийся горлодер современности – Йорн Ланде). И если на первом для Хана альбоме Kamelot "Siege Perilous" еще не так заметны влияния гениального норвежца, то уже в следующем релизе "The Fourth Legacy" вовсю видна деятельность Хантатата.
Ну а после удивительного шедевра под названием "Karma" миру стало ясно: рождена новая звезда мелодичного прогрессив-пауэра, и имя ей – Kamelot. Рой Хан привнес в творения американских музыкантов не только красивейшие мелодичные ходы, но и своим голосом значительно расширил гармонический диапазон исполняемых тем. Здесь вам и ультрабыстрые боевики, и среднетемповые тяжеляки, и грациозные неслащавые баллады, и витиевато-мрачные эпики: Согласитесь, редко сейчас можно найти коллектив, способный так слаженно и гармонично воспроизводить столь обширный музыкальный материал. Разумеется, что после "Karma" все поклонники группы ожидали чего-то если не лучшего, то хотя бы такого же.
И камелотовцы выдали свой новый полноформатник, включающий аж 17 треков. Традиционно альбом открывается инструментальным интро, которое перерастает в ураган под названием "Center Of Universe". Красивый боевичок, но несколько напоминает последние творения Rhapsody. Следом за ним идет почти такой же по ритму и гармоническим построением "Farewell" – более интересная композиция, в которой все также прослеживается наследие итальянских законодателей симфо-пауэра. Далее, после небольшой интерлюдии, следует стандартный камелотовский среднетемповый кайф "The Edge Of Paradise" с характерным восточным душком. Приятный медлячок "Wander" очень типичен для Роя Хана. Снова интерлюдия, и во всем великолепии раскрывается очень многослойная вещь "Descent Of The Archangel", снова входящая в стадию интерлюдии. Трек "A Feast For The Vain" вполне мог бы написать Лука Турилли, а потому меня снова посетила мысль о сходстве с Rhapsody – тот же джигитский ритм, те же еле заметные, но жесткие и быстрые гитарные пассажи, хорошо сочетающиеся с оркестровыми наигрышами. Акустическая "On The Coldest Winter Night" довольно неплоха, но как-то не вписывается в общий настрой альбома, кажется чужеродной. Странноватая "Lost & Damned" с аккордеоном в куплетах подкупает своим стремительным припевом, хотя пресловутая рапсодиеобразность и здесь немного портит общую картину. Музыканты, явно заразившись симфоническими забавами своих итальянских коллег, вовсю поизвращались на инструменталке "Helena's Theme" и последующей интерлюдии. И только в "Mourning After" наконец-то во всю свою мощь вылезает истинный дух Камелота. Тяжело, красиво, эпично, душевно. Основная вещь альбома – "III Ways To Epica" по самые уши наполнена помпезностью, симфо-выкрутасами и прогрессивными фишками. Закрывает альбом бонус-трек "Snow" – вещь до боли в пятках напоминает о славных временах Conception, хотя прекрасно вписывается в заданную стилистику всего альбома.
Прослушав альбома раз десять, я так и не смог однозначно определиться в своих ощущениях. Временами хотелось кричать "Браво!" и от восторга лезть на стену. А порой хотелось выключить колонки и написать разгромную рецензию. "Epica" получилась очень хорошей, тут ничего не скажешь. Великолепное продюсирование, филигранная ткань музыкального полотна, сумасшедшая техника и профессионализм музыкантов и неподражаемый голос Хана. Все это, конечно, выводит данный релиз в списки одних из лучших релизов года. Да только вряд ли, к сожалению, этот альбом станет лучшим в истории группы. Ибо у Kamelot было свое неповторимое лицо, свой уникальный мир. А теперь же получилось лишь очередное следование модным тенденциям в духе Rhapsody с камелотовским размахом. Повсеместное присутствие привкуса итальянского симфо-пауэра не дает полноценно насладиться этим творением прославленного коллектива. И будет очень жаль, если и следующий релиз еще дальше уйдет в дебри клонирования вышеозначенной группы.
На мой взгляд лучший альбом одной из самых достойных паверных команд современности! Здесь соблюдены все требования, предъявляемые для музыки стиля: и мощь гитарных рифов, и мелодичность, и отличный (классический паверный) вокал
