Prog rocker’s District 97 return with their sophomore effort The Trouble With Machines. The band is fronted by 2007 American Idol Top 10 finalist Leslie Hunt, who kind of weaves in and out of the dynamic tapestry the band weaves. Of course, it should be noted that this is simply another reason to support the idea that the American Idol is more game show than talent show. The band does an excellent job of challenging her voice, switching on a dime between Yes inspired ambience and short and punchy heavy rock.

The best examples of this are the opening and closing tunes. The 8:44 “Back and Forth” is precisely as it says, opening the CD with short bursts of heavy intermingled with demonstrative guitar work and gorgeous interludes. “The Thief’ likewise brings the album to a close by intermingling almost melodic hard rock with late sixties/early seventies style prog (think King Crimson, Yes, or Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) complete with big keyboard solos and near jazz fusion drumming. There are a few more straightforward tunes here as well, such as the punchy “Open Your Eyes” and the flowing “Who Cares?” Both are unquestionably progressive rock but have a certain commercial appeal that you don’t always find in bands of this persuasion. “The Perfect Young Man” reminds me a good bit of some of their more experimental parts of Alice Cooper’s classic Welcome to My Nightmare album as well as Kansas’ Monolith and Song For America albums. It also features Hunt dueting with genre legend John Wetton (UK, Asia, King Crimson).

Overall this is a great album. I absolutely love it and, as a half-hearted fan of the genre, I can definitely confirm that appeals far beyond the walls of complex prog rock. There’s an appeal here that pulls in the die-hard musicologist as well as the musician’s musician and the radio listener. The Trouble With Machines is a rare triple threat and an essential 2012 purchase.
