В 1977 в английском городе Ковентри появилась команда «The Automatics», в состав которой входили клавишник Джерри Даммерс, басист Хорэйс Пантер, гитарист Линвал Голдинг, барабанщик Сильвертон Хатчинсон и вокалист Тим Стриклэнд. Выступая в клубах, группа завоевывала внимание публики преподнесением коктейля из панка и рэгги. Спустя некоторое время Тима сменил Терри Холл, а Джерри притащил в коллектив своего знакомого гитариста Родди Байерса. В такой конфигурации «Automatics» записали пробную пленку и попытались пристроить ее куда-нибудь, но из этой затеи ничего не вышло. К тому моменту группа уже успела сменить ряд названий: «The Coventry Automatics», «The Special AKA The Coventry Automatics» и наконец «The Special AKA». Британские гастроли прошли с аншлагами, и «Specials» отправились покорять Америку. Там они выступали на разогреве у «Police» и зачастую затыкали хедлайнеров за пояс. Однако внутри коллектива начались стычки, и запись второго альбома прошла в напряженной обстановке. На «More Specials» группа сделала разворот от ска и панка в сторону ланджа, но, тем не менее, публика тепло встретила работу, и пластинка вошла в заветный Топ 10. По окончании сопутствующих гастролей часть музыкантов занялась сторонними проектами. Несмотря на этот факт в 1981 вышло видео «Dance Craze» и свеженький миньон «Ghost Town». Между тем, обстановка в коллективе продолжала накаляться, что привело к неминуемому распаду. Терри, Невилль и Линвал сколотили новый бэнд «Fun Boy Three», а Джерри, Хорэйс и Брэд спустя несколько месяцев вернулись к названию «The Special AKA». Доукомплектовав состав с помощью Стэна Кэмпбелла (вокал), Эгидио Ньютона (вокал), Джона Шипли (гитара), Гэри МакМануса (бас) и Рода Дакара (вокал), музыканты занялись производством синглов. Каждый из участников проекта пошел своей дорогой, хотя время от времени их пути пересекались. В 2008 «The Specials» объявила о воссоединении в оригинальном составе. По словам вокалиста коллектива Невилла Стэпла, все семеро музыкантов «первого призыва» начали репетировать свой классический материал, чтобы представить его в лучшем виде в ходе своего грядущего воссоединительного турне по Европе позднее в этом году.
В апреле 2009 коллектив отправился на гастроли в своем классическом составе.
