The Challis Effect (named after a small town in central Idaho) began in late 2011, originally as just a couple of ideas and a couple of acoustic demos. Boise, Idaho native and multi-instrumentalist Matthew "Axl" Brammer [born Matthew Peck], after having spent years playing in extreme metal bands and solo projects, put the aggression aside momentarily and began toying with softer ideas that had been laying dormant for years...and the result was something much bigger. Axl spent early 2012 recording and posting demos on the internet, including the Haunted and Alone and Wishful Thinking and Broken Dreams demos, which were immediately well received by music lovers for their emotion, honesty, and catchy melody. Axl went to work throughout the summer of 2012, however, refining new demos, adding more instrumentation, and transforming the style of the project while releasing several single songs as demos. In the fall of 2012, he announced that he would finally be recording a debut, full length album titled Your Heart Was Built On A Graveyard Of Lies, which would include full versions of several of the demos as well as new material and bonus tracks.

The Challis Effect brought Axl back to his roots of bare-bones rock and roll, based on musicianship, melody, and most of all, honesty. Digging up some of the most personal lyrical content he's ever written, and displaying a softer and more emotional side musically than ever before, Axl has embraced and enjoyed the change in musical scenery. Drawing on the influences of bands like Creed, Default, The Goo Goo Dolls, Lifehouse, and more, Axl has seized the opportunity to reach out to music lovers and connect with them on a different level, in a different way, than ever before.
