Alright let's not lie to ourselves. Metal is very much based on acquired tastes. If it wasn't for acquired tastes, CELTIC FROST, NAPALM DEATH and hell even DRAGONFORCE would not have experienced the kind of legend, popularity and, yes, infamy that they experience today. Shredding above all else is probably the biggest of acquired tastes. It requires not only a musicians ear but also an appreciation for sheer speed to be enjoyed. For that reason mainstream guitarists are often more simpler in design like ANGUS YOUNG, SLASH or JIMMY PAGE while shredders like YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, JASON BECKER and STEVE VAI are really only on the lips of Metalheads and the odd music fan willing to listen. On his fourth disc "Territory 4”, neo-classical, 80's-throwback shredder THEODORE ZIRAS really pushes the limits as to how acquired a taste can be.
His promos and interviews are all awash with how he wanted to step out of the box and experiment with new grooves and more obscure modes and scales. Right there he is working to distance himself from the musically-untrained and is doing what JOE SATRIANI has been working to do in the new millennium. Unlike his previous outing, ZIRAS has not brought along a huge star like DEREK SHERINIAN to match his note wailing, but has instead brought rising stars with him and backed them all up with PAUL GILBERT/NECROPHAGIST drummer Marco Minnemann. The results are extremely impressive but wholly inaccessible and somewhat uneven.
The first two tracks specifically are somewhat dull. Often times shred instrumental albums are broken up with vocal tracks or ballads in order to allow the tracks to flow and not seem overtly similar. "Territory 4” acts like a Progressive Metal album that is broken up with Melodic Metal tracks which, unfortunately, does not carry the same effect. In this way, tracks like "Strong Desire”, "Over The Sky”, "A New Sunrise” and those aforementioned first tracks are somewhat dull and despite having strong melodies, are quite unmemorable. They often have typical song structures, straightforward tempos and the guitars tend to be overshadowed by the keyboards, which is obviously undesirable on a guitar album.
For those paying attention, that makes half the tracks mediocre. That is true, but the above score is not misguided as the other five tracks are absolutely outstanding. The triple-header of "Blasphemy”, "O.K.” and "The Sheen” are what will really cinch the album for most instrumental Metal fans. Each track dives through unique tempos, creative key changes and general guitar wizardry before climaxing with one hell of a guitar solo in "The Sheen” that is quite reminiscent of Timo Tolkki's insane shred on STRATOVARIUS' "Stratofortress”. Skip ahead a couple of tracks to "Irredenta” where ZIRAS breaks out the cello for an oddly fitting and gutsy solo in the bridge. The album's crowning achievement, however, is the gorgeous finale "Wolfgang's March” which is a disgustingly superb canon of solos played over a familiar classical melody that brings the album to a crashing, satisfying conclusion.
Half decent, half amazing, THEODORE ZIRAS' "Territory4” is a haphazard, yet technically sound release. Rated as the 5th fastest guitarist, it is a wonder that the virtuoso decided not to feature as much speed noodling as his youtube videos have made him known fo
