"Described by some as a female Jeff Buckley, Mary Beth''s strength is in her ability to create a soundtrack for modern day life, with the vibrancy of Sheryl Crow and the introspective and heart wrenching songwriting skills of Tori Amos. Her edgy musical persona takes the fluff out of your typical female acts, preferring to be brutal and honest, with a flair for sarcasm, captivating guitar riffs, keyboards, and styles that range from acoustic to all out rock." --Kaffeinebuzz.com

Ever since she was a little girl, Mary Beth has been making things up. Making up songs, that is. Growing up in a musical family with her pianist mother and multi-instrumentalist sibllings, every child in the Abella household was forced kicking and screaming to piano lessons at an early age. The pay off is a melodic songwriting sensibility that compliments Mary Beth´s achingly beautiful, original voice.
Abella is the recipient of the Lionel Richie Songwriting Scholarship at UCLA, finalist in the Song of the Year contest, and a nominee of Westword Magazine’s Best of Denver. She has opened for acts such as Heart, Mates of State, and Juliana Hatfield. Her songs have been featured on MTV´s Real World/Road Rules, in indie films, shorts, and on Internet and college Radio stations across the country and around the world. She was also recently featured as the Wicked Woman of the Week artist on Bonaire''s Ladies in Music radio show. She released two albums, ´´What Happened to the Girls?´´ (2002) and ´´Nice Girl´´ (2007) to critical acclaim. Both were produced by her brother, John Abella. An activist, social worker, and SGI Buddhist, the artist is currently working on a music video.

Following the release of her second album--the primarily guitar-based, “Nice Girl--" Abella spent the next few years exploring new instrumentation while playing glockenspiel, keys, guitar, percussion, and even kazoo for hubby, Chris Jacks’ (Sandra Bernhard, Fly, Space Mtn) alt rock band, The Chromium Heart. Inspired by Jacks’ knack for creating original sounds from both traditional and nontraditional instruments, toys, and other objects, Abella recruited his innovative production, arrangement, and multi-instrumentalist skills to complete her third album, “In Another Life.”
“In Another Life” blends Mary Beth Abella’s haunting vocal style, catchy, Beatles-esque melodies, and well-crafted lyrics with Jacks’ lush production. The result is a delicious mix of rich, dream-like pieces that travel genres from upbeat indie pop, ala Feist and Aimee Mann ("Make Me Happy" and "Ever Stays the Same"), to sweet modern folk, like Bon Iver ("Home"), to more moody, multi-layered songs, reminiscent of the Flaming Lips, Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi, and Nico ("Another Dream," "If Anyone," "Holding My Breath").
Abella is the recipient of the Lionel Richie Songwriting Scholarship at UCLA Extension, finalist in the Song of the Year contest, a Westword Magazine Best Singer Songwriter nominee, and was named top 10 artists by the Denver Daily News for her album, “What Happened to the Girls?” Her first two albums ´´Nice Girl´´ and "What Happened to the Girls?" are available at www.cdbaby.com and on iTunes.
