Описание: Jess Franco has a long and storied career in horror, erotica, and exploitation films. With a resume of several hundred films, it’s hard to get a good feel for his body of work from a single film. One of the more important films in his catalog is NECRONOMICON. The 1968 film marked a shift away from the horror themes of his DR. ORLOFF series, towards a more surreal and cerebral imagery that would typify much of his subsequent work. A re-edited version appeared in the US as SUCCUBUS, and Blue Underground has restored and released the film on DVD.
Lorna is the star of an erotic and violent nightclub act produced by her boyfriend Bill. Bill senses something strange about Lorna, so he keeps her at arm’s length despite her desire for him. After being rebuffed again, Lorna falls asleep and has an elaborate and surreal dream where she wanders through the city. After passing several bizarre spectacles, she spends arrives at a seaside castle and meets some strange characters. Her waking life begins to mirror the odd occurrences in her dreams, particularly after a wild party where she and Bill drop acid. As the situation becomes even stranger when mysterious men begin following them, Bill leaves Lorna behind when he travels to Berlin to produce a new show. When both Lorna and the weird happenings follow him, he devises a more foolproof way to free himself from her influence.
Open in new windowSUCCUBUS does not follow the traditional cinematic narrative structure. In its place it uses a format that itself is quite dreamlike. Lorna’s dreams and waking life continuously merge during the film, making it as difficult for the viewer to discern reality from dream as it is for Lorna. Her dreams are a collage of images ranging from the erotic to the paranoid, but all having a common theme. Throughout the film, there is an underlying feeling that there is information that both we the viewers and Lorna are missing. Different ideas regarding Lorna’s true nature are hinted at occasionally; with her sometimes being portrayed as royalty or other times described as a demon. Whether Lorna has forgotten the truth, or is simply pretending to be something she is not is never fully explained. The ambiguity of the film is its strength. Without a definitive answer about many of the questions, the viewer is allowed to substitute their own interpretations and become an active participant in the film.
The term “American version” often causes more discriminating film lovers to turn the other way, but Blue Underground has brought an excellent print of SUCCUBUS to DVD that is practically identical to the European version NECRONOMICON. Unlike other American versus European comparisons, nothing of great importance is missing from this cut of the film and this is “Rated X” version released in the US. The print of the film is beautiful and makes good use of Franco’s compelling visuals. Franco fans will want to take note that the disc contains a twenty-two minute interview with the man himself where he goes into detail about the film’s production.
Open in new windowLike most of Franco’s work, SUCCUBUS is a bit of an acquired taste and an experience that some viewers may not be ready for. Do not let the challenging nature of the film dissuade you from enjoying it, however. SUCCUBUS/NECRONOMICON is one of Franco’s most intelligent and powerful works. If you’re only familiar with his later “one take and done” style of directing, do yourself a favor and see what Franco was capable of with a larger budget and more time.
