"Tenebris is yet another in a long line of cool Polish prog metal bands and they’ve actually been around in one form or another since the early 90s (after a short break around 2004)... Now after four years, the band has come out with Alpha Orionis and what a difference a few years can make! This is a much more intricate and varied album with a ton to offer any prog metal fan. Tenebris is a five-piece band (with the addition of keyboards to the standard lineup) and the guys here are seriously interested in all things outer space, hence the pics on their albums of aliens or, as on the new album, a cool picture of indigenous peoples (Mayan perhaps?) being greeted by a tall four-armed visitor. I haven’t read the lyrics yet so I’m gonna guess that the album mainly deals with a visitor from a faraway star and how he and the people he encounters deal with his visit. There is a vague ominousness at times but also an exciting hopefulness to the album as well.
The music is somewhat varied but is propelled by an often dark and ominous sound, great drumming (drummer Grzegorz Graczyk even utilizes tribal beats at times to great effect as well as playing some awesome fusion grooves) and cool vocals that range from dark, deep singing, occasional death vocals (to evoke the aliens perhaps?) and even some tribal chanting. The musicianship is superb and the band can switch from a dark, prog rock sound to ultra heavy and kinda creepy in an instant. The first song, PSI’k on Out is a great example of the band as it begins with an intricate prog rock instrumental with a clean melodic vocal that alternates with a heavy, harsh vocal section that overwhelms the first part in darkness before resolving in a tribal chant. Yep, the Aliens must have arrived! The rest of the album alternates between laconic and somewhat laid-back prog rock jams and totally killer, slow heavy sections. And that’s just for starters – Sempiternal Regnum begins as a heavy prog fusion workout, rapidly gets maniacally heavy and then slows into a soft jam before closing out even more maniacally. Punishment Vision begins with a cool and very wild keyboard line and finishes with some wonderful spacey electronics. The album closer, Alpha Orionis is just perfect, from the dramatic, hypnotic opening to a strange call and response vocal section and finishes out in a slow, heavy and extremely intense manner before an abrupt and perfectly disconcerting way as befits the album’s subject matter. This is a seriously great album with a ton of subtlety and variety that reveals more upon each listen.
It’s been a great year so far for Polish prog metal with the releases of the new Riverside and DispersE albums along with the upcoming new album by Votum. Somehow I get the feeling that Tenebris is not as well-known as these other stellar groups but I hope that’ll be changing soon with the release of this excellent new album..."
