Venezuelan outfit Pi XPRNC started taking shape back in 2001, when Karen Gonzalez started writing material of an eclectic and experimental nature, incorporating influences from a multitude of rather different artists. King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa are among the ones mentioned.
In 2007 Karen decided to start recording this material, and invited various musicians to participate in this project. The end result was the album Algenia, issued on French label Musea Records in 2008. A genre-defying venture, blending art rock with post rock, ambient soundscapes, hard rock and progressive metal, this effort has been favourably received.
2008 also saw Karen taking her creative vehicle from being a studio project to a full fledged ongoing band venture, with invitations to perform at live festivals in Europe in 2009 and 2010 among the highlights of their career so far.
In the 70+ minutes of music served on this venture, it's pretty obvious that the band isn't trying to explore any small niche in terms of stylistic expressions. Almost ambient, industrial influenced soundscapes are scattered throughout the disc, while the compositions contain segments similar to early 80's King Crimson as well as Tool, with eastern tinged atmospheres, jazzy explorations and world music inspired percussions as additional stylistic expressions. More often than not combined in a single tracks.
There's also room for a few more mainstream oriented efforts here, in between the often quirky and complex excursions.
A key feature in all of this is the strong, distinct vocals of composer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader Karen Gonzales; contrasting the often dark and brooding atmospheres provided by the instruments.
Those looking for experimental progressive rock with a multitude of influences and stylistic expressions should take note of this creation.
"Algenia" is a solid and innovative debut album by PI XPRNC. A few exceptions aside, the compositions are innovative and truly deserving of being described as progressive, and this should be an effort of interest to those who enjoy challenging progressive rock covering several different musical expressions.
